ABOUT SAN DIEGO CARES
IT'S IN OUR BLOOD
San Diego Cares is our community’s new holiday blood drive on Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the Town & Country Convention Center from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
About San Diego Cares
San Diego Cares is the San Diego Blood Bank’s biggest celebration and daylong blood drive of the year. The event includes:
- Sports-themed activities and live entertainment for the whole family
- Panels and autograph sessions with professional athletes and local sports legends, including a San Diego Padres Panel featuring members of their 1998 National League championship team
- A chance to win a Honda CR-V and other prizes
Blood donors receive an opportunity drawing ticket for a chance to win a new Honda CR-V, donated by the Honda Dealers of San Diego County. Additional tickets can be purchased at a suggested donation of $5. Eight semi-finalists will be chosen the week of December 11, 2017, and contacted by phone. Two more finalist names will be drawn at the event on December 16 and will be notified by phone. All finalists must be present at the Town & Country Convention Center on event day, where they will choose one of 10 keys at random. The one that opens the door to the new Honda CR-V wins!
In 1979, Rolf Benirschke, San Diego Cares co-chairman, was the placekicker for the San Diego Chargers. After collapsing on a team flight due to ulcerative colitis, Rolf underwent two emergency abdominal surgeries and required almost 80 units of blood. When a local radio station rallied San Diegans to donate blood to replace what Rolf had needed, the community responded in force. The Chargers Blood Drive was born. During its 38-year history in San Diego, the Chargers Blood Drive collected more than 74,000 pints of blood, impacting up to 222,000 lives in our community.
The San Diego Padres, Gulls, Holiday Bowl, Sockers, Kings, Toreros, 1904 Football Club, Xolos, the Nascar Foundation and more are proud to support San Diego Cares. Join us for panels with sports heroes and meet-and-greets with athletes, with VIP access to autographs for blood donors.
